The Nature of "Worship" - Part 1: What Has Changed in the New Testament?--Daily Worship!

Today, there are numerous, endless really, debates about "worship" (not only in Churches of Christ, but in other fellowships as well, though our debates seem to be of a different nature, perhaps). Still, these debates seem to miss the most fundamental issue in the Scriptures about the nature of worship today, which is this. Worship in the New Testament is not limited to a time or place, but is a constant, continual…

Is Having a "Friends Day" Missional?

This Sunday we are having an old style "Friends Day," where we are encouraging members to invite their friends to our worship service. It simply gives members an excuse to invite their friends. It will be good to see what kind of response we get from this.

Some questions arise, such as, Are people motivated to invite yet?…

Worship - Entering Into God's Story (The 5 Parts of the Worship Story)

This Sunday I am speaking on worship--a subject which is incredibly vast. What can a person say in one lesson that could possibly do justice to the subject?

As a sort of over view, I am speaking on Worship - Entering into God's Story. Worship in English comes from the idea of ascribing worth to something. It is very easy, however, to over emphasize what we do…

End Worship Service with a "Sending" - Missional Thought of the Day

J esus said to his disciples, "As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you" (Jn. 20:21). Being sent is a part of who and what God does.

The more that the missional understanding is taking hold, the more this understanding causes us to rethink all of our daily lives and church life and practice. Mission was once relegated to a side ministry of the church. In…

Small Groups Must Grow as a Primary Expression of Church - Missional Thought of the Day

In North American culture we have long tried to take people who gather for worship and then divide them up into small groups. With some notable exceptions in a few churches, this has not worked all that well. In most churches, there are many more involved in worship than in small groups.

Why is this a problem? Because it is usually only in smaller communities that true, lasting transformation takes place. I am not denying the power…

Missional Thought of the Day - The Link Between Mission and Worship

John Piper begins his book, Let the Nations Be Glad, with the statement, "Missions exists because worship doesn't."

In his new book, The Mission of God's People, Christopher Wright has a chapter on worship and its relation to mission. He echoes Piper, stating that "the goal of all our mission is the worship and glory of the one true living God." He then defines both God's mission and our…

Being Missional in Our Worship Times - Americans need more sleep

Being missional must factor into everything that we do. This should include even such things as our worship times. Is this not what a missionary would do? Is this not what a church planter would do? Absolutely! They would say, what time would have the best chance of having someone that we are trying to reach attend? They would not say, hmm, I think I'll have it at _____ time because that is what I like.

So what worship times would be culturally… Continue
