Why are Churches of Christ Shrinking? - Part 2: Failure to Understand that it is an Increasingly Unchurched, Post-Christian World

Here is the second in a series of blog posts on why Churches of Christ are shrinking. The first post,"A Left-Brained Fellowship in a Right-Brained World," has gone viral. While not everyone agrees with everything in the post, from the new members that joined the network, it would appear that a high percentage of these new…

Why You're Not Reaching the Unchurched

How do you reach the unchurched? Build it and they will come? Here is a very relevant article from ChurchLeaders.com on reaching the unchurched.

Another one came this past week. A flyer arrived in my…

How do you reach an increasingly unchurched, post-religious, post-Christian culture with the gospel?

Churches across the United States are shrinking. In fact, every single fellowship, including Churches of Christ, is on the decline. It used to be said that healthy churches grow. In today's climate, with a shrinking percentage of the population being Christian, healthy churches may not necessarily grow. They may shrink due to the overall decline of Christianity in our culture.

It will take more than just church health to grow churches. It will take more than…

Telling the Story of Redemption in Today's Unchurched, Postmodern World

In 1979, Francois Lyotard wrote The Postmodern Condition, in which he recognized this seismic change that was sweeping across culture and philosophy. The postmodern condition “pertains to one’s awareness of the deconstructibility of all systems of meaning and truth.”[1] Postmodernism is a condition rather than a singular definition, for every system of meaning…

Why is "church" not working for most people?

Weekly church attendance in the US is 17.5% and dropping. Why is this? Why is it that "church" just is not working for the majority of people?

One of the new members on the Missional Outreach Network told me that she found this site through reading Mike Slaughter's book, Change the World: Recovering the Message and Mission of Jesus. Naturally, I checked the…

Why Missional Communities (Mid-sized Groups of 20-70) may be the best way to reach the unchurched

The major focus of this year's Exponential New Churches conference (a church planting conference) was on missional communities. Besides people like Alan Hirsch laying down a foundation for this, many of these sessions were led by Mike Breen and Alex Absalom, authors of…

Why the Gospel Should Be Shared as a Narrative (Story), not as Propositions

The Story of Redemption is an eight part evangelistic Bible study that I have written to help lead unchurched, postmodern people to faith in Jesus Christ. This story is largely narrative in form, which is appropriate for many reasons. [1]

  • Humans are storytellers, and they make sense of their lives through narrative.[2]
  • Most of Scripture is narrative, and the Christian faith was presented…

99% of Churches are not growing by reaching unchurched - Easter Sunday can help reverse the trend

Back in 2008, David Laubach presented some statistics at the Baptist World Alliance gathering in Prague. There he stated that church attendance was stagnant or declining in 75% of churches in America. Of the remaining churches, 24% of churches were “growing” by getting members from the declining churches. Only 1% of churches are growing from reaching the unchurched.…

Some Statistics On the Number of Unchurched in US

Here are some statistics about the unchurched from The Tangible Kingdom.

  • "The Barna group reveals that one-third of the adult population (34 percent) has not attended any type of church service or activity, other than a special event such as a funeral or wedding, during the…
