Why Would a Family from Texas Come to Washington, D.C. to Help People Learn English? - Let's Start Talking/FriendSpeak Mission Trip

Excited to have Hector and Meliss Hinojosa, along with their sons Joshua and Caleb, here for two weeks at the Fairfax Church of Christ on a FriendSpeak mission trip. Hector is on the missions committee at The Hills in Fort Worth, Texas. They wanted to go on a personal, family mission trip through FriendSpeak/ Let's Start Talking--and chose to come here to the Washington, D.C. area! FriendSpeak/Let's Start Talking is an outreach ministry that helps people practice their English by reading through the gospel of Luke.

This morning the Hinojosa family helped our ESL/FriendSpeak ministry leader, Jerri Harrington, pass out fliers inviting people to a sign-up meeting tonight at 7 pm at the church building for those who want to schedule times to practice their English through the FriendSpeak ministry. With all of the immigrants in the DC area, this is a great outreach, as so many of them want to improve their lives by improving their English skills. I was proud of my girls for joining in this effort and helping to pass out fliers.

We began handing out fliers in the neighborhoods around the church. It was a good day to do this, not only because of the nice weather, but because a number of people were outside due to a yard sale. So we got to talk with several people, especially in the neighborhood behind the church. One of our members, Pam, is the head of the neighborhood association behind the church. And one of the people at the yard sale suggested the church hosting the yard sale sometime. When you get out into the community, a lot of great things can happen!

Please pray that God will send people our way for the sign-up meeting tonight, and that God blesses these two weeks with the Hinojosa family here. Also, FriendSpeak training with Mark Woodward is coming up the weekend of June 6-8--if you are interested in being trained, you won't want to miss this!

Finally, I am excited about how a local mission trip like this can not only help our ministry here, but the impact that it can have upon the kids who go on these trips. I grew up going on Let's Start Talking mission trips, and it was very instrumental in shaping my heart for mission and becoming a minister. This reason alone would be enough for a family from Texas to travel to DC for a mission trip!

What do you see is the value of ministries like FriendSpeak and short term mission trips?
