Why did Sandra Bullock Turn Down the role of Christian Leigh Anne Tuohy in "The Blind Side" Three TImes? (And How God May Have Been at Work TONIGHT through This Movie!)

Okay, so tomorrow at the Fairfax Church of Christ I am talking about how God's Spirit is inside of us, too, and that WE are called to authentically "preach" the good news too lovingly in word and deed (Luke 4).

And that if we pray and ask for these opportunities to do this, God will send them our way. But this "preaching" must be as through loving acts of kindness as well as a spoken message, just as Jesus healed the sick and fed the hungry most every time he preached.

So tonight, for some reason, I decided to put in the Sandra Bullock movie, "The Blind Side," which is a story about a Christian family that takes in a homeless kid from the other side of town, adopts him, helps him in school, loves him, and helps him get a scholarship to play football at Ole Miss and later play in the NFL as a huge offensive lineman.

So while I am watching the movie, I start looking up the religious views of Sandra Bullock. And I find out that she turned down this role--for which she won an academy award--three times, because of her hesitance to play a devout Christian. Many believe her to be agnostic or atheistic.

And as I am reading about her religious views and her making of this movie, I read this quote from her:

"One of my biggest concerns stepping into this [role] was how people use their faith and their religion as a banner, and then they don’t do the right thing. They go, ‘I’m a good Christian, and I go to church, and this is the way you should live your life.’ And I’m like, do not give me a lecture on how to live my life when you go to church every week, but I know you’re still sleeping around on your wife."

But after playing the role and encountering genuine Christian love in finding out about the Christian family behind this true story, she said, "I now have the blessing of having my res——not a restored faith–but I now have faith in those who say they represent a faith. I finally met people who walk the walk."

This week I prayed all week, as I do every week, for God to bring people, illustrations, and stories into my path that will touch people's lives and move them in following God's word. And tomorrow I am speaking on authentically living/preaching the gospel. Why did I randomly pick this movie to put in and play today? Maybe God was illustrating to me the very thing that I am speaking on--that when we pray for him to open doors to preach the gospel, he will do so.

And what did I also read tonight? The town that Sandra Bullock is from? Alexandria, Virginia--suburb of Washington, D.C. right next to Fairfax, Virginia. Wow.

Do you think that the story i just shared is God at work? Coincidence? What stories like this do you have to share?

Here’s what God has brought me to understand in my Christian walk; He not only prepares the soil (situation, people, events, open doors) so we can sow the seed, but He is the one who germinates the seed that we sow.  If our prayers are not as Paul requested,

Colossians 4:3

praying at the same time for us as well, that God will open up to us a door for the word, so that we may speak forth the mystery of Christ, for which I have also been imprisoned;

then we will never know the joy of being in the mission of God. My experiences have been many, but the most memorable was recently when I was “accidently” taken to a house and found the woman there reading Acts 8 and asking questions about true conversion, transformation, and baptism. No one, save God, could have opened such a wide door. Just as Peter was brought to Cornelius, Philip to the Eunuch, Paul to Lidia, God still brings people into our lives –strategically-- so that we can share the Light. “Lo, I am with you always….”

God is STILL at work in the world and we are privileged and blessed to become partners with God in that mission.

The devil is also at work in the world and we must also pray for him to “get behind us” and leave the soil in the hearts of those we teach as fertile for the Gospel response.
