Mothers are so precious! None of us would be alive without a mother (and a father--but it is Mother's Day today). We all have a mother. Our parents had mothers. Our grandparents had mothers. Jesus had a mother. Only Adam and Eve did not have a mother. And yet, they were both made in the image of God.

The creation account in Genesis says this:

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them (Gen. 1:26-27).

Everything good that comes from mothers comes from God, for both men and women are made in God's image. So when a mother performs her role of motherhood, it gives us insight into one aspect of the character and nature of God. God is loving, nurturing, and caring, as so many mothers are. Most mothers work endless hours raising children and working both inside and outside the home. Their is a labor of love, and a role and ministry which we honor.

I realize that while everyone has a mother who gave birth to them, not everyone had a mother that raised them because they may have been abandoned. And some had mothers who were absent in other ways or unkind. But we are all called to "honor our father and mother" (Ex. 20:12), and we can all be thankful for our birth.

I am thankful for my mother, who raised in the way of the Lord, reading Bible stories to me every night and giving me countless "teachable moments." And I am thankful for my wife Becki, who is a great mother to my children. To all mothers everywhere, we thank you and give you honor this Sunday.
