Lord Give Me . . . - Thought of the Day

So much of our prayers are about asking God to give us something. And that is okay. We should go to God with our hopes, dreams, and desires.

But isn't interesting how Jesus, when teaching his disciples how to prayer, says simply, "Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debt as we have forgiven our debtors. Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

In the video above, Francis Chan talks about just asking God to give us our daily bread. Wow. That would change most of our prayer lives.

I have listed below the Bible verses in Psalms which contain the words "Give me."

Ps 4:1
Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give
me
relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer.
Ps 86:11
Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.
Ps 86:17
Give me a sign of your goodness, that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.
Ps 119:34
Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart.
Ps 119:73
Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands.
Ps 119:125
I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes.
Ps 119:144
Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live. Qoph
Ps 119:169
May my cry come before you, O LORD; give me understanding according to your word.
Ps 141:8
But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.

Do you notice how almost all of the things that are asked for are spiritual things? How much of our prayer lives are devoted towards asking for physical things, and how much are they directed towards spiritual things? What about in the worship assembly?

During this time of Thanksgiving, perhaps we should be more thankful for the physical things that we do have, and pray more fervently for spiritual things.

How much should we pray for physical things, and how much should we pray for spiritual things?

Bill, I understand the dilemma that you face in retirement about giving and saving. Both are biblical concepts.

excellent thoughts Brother . I believe that as His our father , God will give us when we pray to him about what we need . I always pray with hope that He will supply all my needs and encourage me in His work until my life end . prayer is powerful .I always give thanks to him for his blessings poured in my life.

These are great thoughts. It was Agur, not Solomon, who prayed this prayer. God gives us the power to be wealthy. We should receive what He gives us with thanksgiving. I Tim. 4:4. God in His wisdom turns on/off the spicket as He sees fit. My attitude should be that in the prayer. God only give me what I need to accomplish your work.

For older people in retirement it may be a challenge for them to know how much should be kept in the bank and how much to give away. The Proverbs speak of giving part of your estate to your survivors. If one keeps too much, he is a hoarder. If he keeps too little, he becomes dependent on others. I believe Agur's prayer can be summarized as: Lord, give me the wisdom to know how to adjust my assets so as to maximize my love for you. Bill b.
