New Book Talk information is in the Discussion "BOOK TALK Information - Sept 2009-May 2010" Take a look. Plan on meeting on Oct. 15 to discuss "Same Kind of Different as Me". The authors are local and the setting is the DFW area.

I went, but I was the only one. I found the book interesting, I like looking at other people's thought processes. She may have lost me at the end. Interesting relating the religion to marriage. She felt she had married and divorced Judaism. But is it truly that way if she is ultimately in search of a relationship with God and finds the true path through his Son, Jesus?

Did anyone make it to the Book Talk on June 18th? I am so sorry that the didn't have an official facilitator. I know Becki was out and so was I. Please feel free to start a discussion and share your thoughts on Girl Meets God.
July's book is Francine River's A VOICE IN THE WIND. We'll meet on July 16th.

Tara, Thank you for your thoughtful answers. I have edited The Shack discussion above for those who want to begin discussing. It says SPOILER ALERT to warn people. Hope that helps.

To All: I just finished reading The Shack yesterday. It is AMAZING. I'm about to run out and use the last of my Christmas money to buy two copies, so I can loan them out over the next 3 weeks until we meet.
I'm not sure how much it's OK to discuss it on here (I don't want to give out any spoilers so early) and how much I should just wait and discuss it at the February book talk.
If you've been unsure whether you plan to read it, I really can't recommend a book any higher, with the exception of the Bible, of course. :)

To Casey, re: How do your kids learn about Grace, without having to learn it the really hard way (like we did)? And how do you ask God to make that happen?

I've always found that I have the BEST answers to prayer when I tell my Dad (God) what I want, knowing and accepting that He can say "no." And then if He says no, you have to accept the fact that you can't be mad at Him over it. Wait...you can be mad for a little while...you just have to get over it. Meaning if you STAY mad at Him, then you are NOT accepting His decision. If you go into prayer accppeting that He may have completely different plans, and therefore He may have to tell you "no, you can't have what you want," and if that's the case you're going to accept His decision, He really appreciates that. That shows that you're acting like a child should act toward their father....you're trusting Him to know what's best.

And when I say I've received the "best" answers...sometimes that means He answers it the way I was asking for, and sometimes that means He answers it BETTER than what I was hoping for, and in a way I truly could not have even dreamt up. (Which makes me remember the verse: To Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine....Ephesians 3:20.)
When I go into prayer saying, "Dear Daddy...here's what I want, but I know that you may have something different in mind for me, and I accept your decision," He usually gives me something WAY better than what I asked for.

So...I know that only half-way answers your question...but the point is, ASK God for what you want - ask Him to spare Ryann some of the things you went through. Do keep in mind that (as you mentioned, character is built through tough life experiences) you don't want to ask Him that she NEVER experiences pain and difficulties in life, or she truly would grow up to be a wimp. :) Think of the iconic figures who we all see on TV, who grew up having everything they wanted, and life handed to them on a silver platter...they are adults with NO moral character.
OK - I've rambled too long, but I think your question was a REALLY GOOD question, and too important to not talk about in depth.

Ok Ladies, So far, the books we are reading have so much to do with prayer. Last night as I was laying down to go to sleep, I began praying for Ryann. One thing I started to pray for is that she would really know God's grace. (Like Jodi learned in YadaYada.) However, I had to stop. I want her to know His grace, but I don't want her to have to learn it the way Jodi did, or Florida, or the way so many of us end up learning things. So how do I pray for her to know these incredible things that God has for us, knowing that she might have to be hit over the head with a frying pan (figuratively speaking) to learn them.

As a mother, I want to protect my child from the pains of life. But through my own experiences, I know that character is built through those tough life experiences.

Just a thought - If you have any wisdom to share, please, SHARE!
