Together in Mission

The missional impulse...

"asks its community “How can we help you?” instead of knocking on doors to increase membership. In other words, it becomes a community with open windows and open doors and sees Sunday morning as the opportunity to prepare for a week of service to the community, asking not how many are attending the services but what redemptive traits are we seeing in our community. It wants to embody a life that is other-oriented rather than self-oriented, that is community-directed rather than church-oriented."

I'm just getting started as a minister to small groups. What reading materials would anybody recommend to get me more acquainted?

Hi Trey.
Well, I think community is a big thing among Latinos. It's what Latino's like the most. A warm smile, a good joke, a friendly handshake, even a hug are all forms of greetings when encountering Latinos. When I go to a get together, there will be the family and then other families as well. To do something alone is not the way it goes. I feel that among Latinos there is a strong bond of community. People that come here to work often live 10 or more, I have heard, in one apartment. This is not everyone but this is an example that happens quite frequently with people that come here to survive, to work. I think community is one of the major factors in learning about Latinos. In every aspect of life there is a strong connection to family and not just immediate family but uncles, aunts, grandparents and so on. I think also that many Latinos demonstrate strong community by sending back money to their family members back home. They love to help and be there for their close ones. They have come a long way to help out their kids or parents or family for a better situation, a better life.

Welcome to missional group life, an ongoing description of how the missional impulse will shape everything we think we know about groups and group life.

Please post your questions, your experiences, and your resources as we seek a missional design for group life.
