The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible's grand narrative

Mission is not just one of a list of things that the Bible happens to talk about. Mission is, in that much-abused phrase, ‘what it’s all about’. Now this is a bold claim.
The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible's grand narrative

Mission is not just one of a list of things that the Bible happens to talk about. Mission is, in that much-abused phrase, ‘what it’s all about’. Now this is a bold claim. Does it make sense to speak of the Bible being ‘all about’ anything? Well, Jesus certainly thought so. In Luke 24, first to the two on the road to Emmaus, and then later to the rest of the disciples, Jesus made himself as Messiah the focus of the whole canon of the Hebrew Scriptures (verses 27 and 44).

The whole Bible revolves around the person of Christ. Jesus went on, however, beyond his Messianic centering of the Old Testament Scriptures to their missional thrust as well. ‘Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem”’ (Luke 24.45-48). Jesus claims that the mission of preaching repentance and forgiveness to the nations in his name is ‘what is written’. The whole of the Old Testament Scripture finds its focus and fulfilment both in the life and death and resurrection of Israel’s Messiah and in the mission to all nations, which flows out from that event. We must read our Bibles with twin lenses — Messiah and mission.

1. Whose mission is it anyway?

But can we really say that ‘the whole Bible is about mission’? Not if we think of ‘missions’ as primarily ‘what we do’ — i.e. merely human activity. We need to shift our perspective to see that, like salvation, mission belongs to our God. Mission is not ours; mission is God’s. It is not so much that God has a mission for his church in the world, as that God has a church for his mission in the world. Mission was not made for the church; the church was made for mission — the mission of God. And the flow of the Bible shows us the following main mission themes.

2. God with a mission

God revealed in the Scriptures is personal, purposeful and goal-orientated. In the beginning we see God working towards a goal — the goal of creating the world — completing it with satisfaction and resting, content with the result. And from Genesis 12.1-3 we know this God to be totally, covenantally, eternally committed to the mission of blessing the nations through the agency of the people of Abraham. The Bible presents itself to us as an over-arching narrative in four great movements: creation, fall, redemption and future hope. There is one God at work in the universe and in human history, and that God has a mission which will ultimately be accomplished by the power of his word and for the glory of his name. To read the whole Bible for mission is nothing more than to accept that the biblical worldview locates us in the midst of a narrative of the universe behind which stands the mission of the living God.

3. Humanity with a mission

On the day of their creation, human beings were given their mission on the planet so purposefully prepared for their arrival — the mandate to fill the earth and subdue it and to rule over the rest of creation (Genesis 1.28). And then come the parallel commands ‘to serve and to keep’ the garden (Genesis 2.15). The care and keeping of creation is our human mission. We are on the planet with a purpose that flows from the creative purpose of God himself. Christians need to be reminded that God holds us accountable to himself for our humanity as much as for our Christianity.

4. Israel with a mission

Against the background of human sin and rebellion (Genesis 3-11), God initiated his redemptive mission of blessing the nations beginning with the call of Abraham in Genesis 12. This is the essential missional purpose of God’s election of Old Testament Israel. All that Israel was, or was supposed to be — all that God did in them, for them and through them — was ultimately linked to this wider purpose of God for the nations. Israel’s election was not a rejection of other nations but ultimately for their sake.

5. Jesus with a mission

Jesus did not just arrive; he was sent with a mission. It was at his baptism that Jesus received an affirmation of his true identity and mission. The voice of his Father at his baptism combined the identity of the Servant figure in Isaiah (Isaiah 42.1), and the Davidic Messianic king (Psalm 2.7). The mission of the Servant was to be the agent of God’s salvation reaching to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49.6). The mission of the Davidic Messianic king was both to rule over a redeemed Israel and also to receive the nations and the ends of the earth as his heritage (Psalm 2.8). Jesus built his own agenda on the agenda of his Father. His will was to do his Father’s will. God’s mission determined his. In the obedience of Jesus, even to death, the mission of God reached its climax.

6. The church with a mission

Jesus entrusted his ongoing mission to the church. The disciples knew the true identity of the crucified and risen Jesus; therefore they are entrusted with bearing witness to that to the ends of the earth. Mission flows from the identity of God and his Christ. Mission (for us) means the committed participation of God’s people in the purposes of God for the redemption of the whole creation. When we grasp that the whole Bible constitutes the coherent revelation of the mission of God, then we find our whole worldview impacted by this vision. The Bible is The Story that tells us where we have come from, how we got to be here, who we are, why the world is in the mess it is, how it can be (and has been) changed, and where we are ultimately going. And this whole story constitutes the mission of this God. He is the originator of the story, the teller of the story, the prime actor in the story, the planner and guide of the story’s plot, the meaning of the story and its ultimate completion. He is its beginning, end and centre. It is the story of the mission of God, of this God and no other.

7. Conclusion and the Impact on us.

Now such an understanding of the mission of God as the very heartbeat of all reality, all creation, and all history generates a distinctive worldview that is radically and transformingly God-centred. It turns inside out and upside down some of the common ways in which we are accustomed to think about the Christian life. It is certainly a very healthy corrective to the egocentric obsession of much Western culture — including, sadly, even Western Christian culture. It constantly forces us to open our eyes to the big picture, rather than shelter in the cosy narcissism of our own small worlds.

* We ask, ‘Where does God fit into the story of my life?’ when the real question is where does my little life fit into this great story of God’s mission.

* We want to be driven by a purpose that has been tailored just right for our own individual lives, when we should be seeing the purpose of all life, including our own, wrapped up in the great mission of God for the whole of creation.

* We talk about ‘applying the Bible to our lives’. What would it mean to apply our lives to the Bible instead, assuming the Bible to be the reality — the real story — to which we are called to conform ourselves?

* We wrestle with ‘making the gospel relevant to the world’. But in this story, God is about the business of transforming the world to fit the shape of the gospel.

* We argue about what can legitimately be included in the mission that God expects from the church, when we should ask what kind of church God wants for the whole range of his mission.

* I may wonder what kind of mission God has for me, when I should be asking what kind of me God wants for his mission. The only concept of mission into which God fits is the one of which he is the beginning, the centre and the end. ‘Indeed, the simple truth is that the resurrection cannot be accommodated in any way of understanding the world except one of which it is the starting point’ in truth to tell’ ( Lesslie Newbigin. Truth to Tell: the Gospel as Public Truth, London, SPCK, 1991, p.11). And the only access that we have to that mission of God is given to us in the Bible. This is the grand narrative that is unlocked when we turn the hermeneutical key of reading all the Scriptures in the light of the mission of God.

MISSIONAL AT END OF LIFE CAREtag:missionalnetwork.ning.com,2013-03-07:2422312:Topic:820752013-03-07T18:02:06.197ZBill Walkerhttp://missionalnetwork.ning.com/profile/BillWalker

Like so many labels the word ‘missional’ has different meanings to different folk. However, from my viewpoint as a hospice chaplain, all of life is missional. We all have an ‘errand to run’ in life. For some that comes very early. A five-year-old boy may say he wants to be a firefighter when he grows up and that does become his passion and vocation. Another person may engage in several missions in life before settling in on their passion years later.

Although,…

Another person may engage in several missions in life before settling in on their passion years later.

Although, originally given to the disciples, Matthew 10 is a missional chapter for me. Jesus summoned and sent twelve men among the Israelite nation on a mission that changed the world. It is no different for us today. Whether intentional or almost by accident God’s mission is being fulfilled by ordinary folk like you and me. Whether it is being a master teacher or simply giving a cup of cold water in God’s name, His mission is being fulfilled. Many would shy away from the former role, but many can fulfill the latter.

After being in various ministry roles over my lifetime, I would have never envisioned myself in the role of a hospice chaplain nor considered it missional. However, a couple of friends suggested that I look into a position that was open with hospice. I did and was intrigued. In fact from the very first day on the job I was hooked because I was assigned to attend the funerals of two of our patients.

At one o’clock, the service was for a man who had been a nuclear physicist who helped develop the H-bomb in the early forties. At four o’clock the memorial was for a Jewish lady who was a holocaust survivor. Their lives and their stories were so diverse and riveting. It was between those two ‘bookends’ of life and story that gripped me. Those two memorials underscored the importance of “HIS STORY” and our lives … that is missional!

As the church seeks to be relevant today I would encourage the few, because it is not for everyone, who has the passion and the sense of mission to volunteer in walking alongside terminal patients and their families. Many of the patients are believers and so presence and support is important. But, beyond the patient there is family and friends, some of whom are not believers or who have become skeptical of “churchanity.” This is an excellent time to share our “cup of cold water in His name”. Or if the patient is an unbeliever or estranged from God it can be so important to help them navigate the choppy waters of their unfinished business.

A terminal diagnoses strips away all of the superfluous things in life. God, mate, family, and community all take on a new sense of meaning as well as urgency. And because the mortality rate for human beings constantly hovers at 100%, conversations can become extremely missional. We were created so that dying is the last threshold of living.

Please dialogue with me about your experiences or interests in being missional in the last chapter of life.

America has come a long way and has, at least in part, adopted a more-tolerant attitude toward homosexuality. As far back as May 16, 1991, I watched a special marriage that was performed on the Phil Donahue television show. The wedding party included the couple, the minister, and the usual participants. The couple was joining in what they called "holy matrimony." Following the ceremony, the couple kissed, and the minister offered a prayer. Mr. Donahue and the audience offered their congratulations. The problem? The couple consisted of two men!
For years, there has been afoot in America a movement to present homosexuality as simply an alternate life style. We are inundated with the philosophy that there is no right or wrong and that labeling homosexuality as sinful is judgmental, ignorant, and un-American.
God instituted marriage between a man and a woman. God created a man (Adam) and a woman (Eve). (Genesis 1, 2) After He created Adam, God said: " ...it is not good that man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him." (Genesis 2:18) "Help meet" is from a Hebrew word that means a counterpart or complement. In other words, God intended to provide for Adam, a being ideally suited to meet his social, psychological, emotional, and sexual needs. In the verses that follow, in Genesis 2, we read of God making a woman (ishshah: corresponding to man) for Adam. The companion God made, Adam recognized as "bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh." (Genesis 2:23) God commanded that man should "leave his father and his mother and cleave unto his wife and, we are told in verse 24, they shall be one flesh."
The woman, not another man, is ideally suited to be man’s companion. With regard to man and woman, the apostle Paul also taught (1 Corinthians 11). He wrote: "...the woman is the glory of the man." (vs. 7) Moreover, he penned: "Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man." (vs. 9) As already mentioned, woman is the perfect companion for man, emotionally, socially, and sexually.
One purpose of marriage is reproduction. “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28) No relationship, other than the relationship between man and woman, can produce children.
Marriage is only between man and woman. God sanctioned marriage between man and woman (Genesis 1,2; Hebrews 13:4). He condemned sexual relationships between men and women, outside of marriage (Hebrews 13:4). Conjugal involvement between men and beasts incurs God’s express disapproval (Leviticus 18:23). Observe the plainness of this prohibition: "Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith." (Leviticus 18: 23) Beloved, the "neither" connects the phrase to the preceding prohibition, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination." (Leviticus 18:22) The man who "lies with mankind, as he lieth with a woman," under God's theocratic rule, "shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." (Leviticus 20:13)
Rampant homosexuality is an indication of a seriously degraded society. In Sodom and Gomorrah, the sin of homosexuality reached the point where God said "their sin is very grievous" and "is waxen great." (Genesis 18:20, 19:13) They were so depraved and steeped in homosexuality that any male stranger was in danger ("may know them," in Genesis 19:5, means to know sexually). Jude wrote that "Sodom and Gomorrah,...giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." (Jude 7) So great was the stench of their wickedness that the Lord destroyed them with brimstone and fire out of heaven (Genesis 19:24). Notice Jude's statement regarding "eternal fire" (Jude 7).
In describing the degenerate state of the Gentile world during New Testament times, Paul wrote, of the sin of homosexuality, "Men with men, working that which is unseemly." (Romans 1:27) In verse 26, he said "...Even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature." Paul referred to these homosexual relationships as "vile affections." (vs. 26)
Practicing homosexuals will not go to heaven. Some time ago, I listened in amazement as a panel of ministers from several different denominations was questioned regarding homosexuality. Every preacher on the television panel said homosexuality is not even mentioned in the Bible. When pressed, they replied "Jesus did not mention homosexuality." In 1 Corinthians 14:37, Paul stated that he wrote “the commandments of the Lord.” Arraying Jesus against what was written in Leviticus 18:22, etc., is the height of blasphemy. Paul also wrote, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals. ..shall inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9,10-NASV)
Beloved, the argument that homosexuals cannot help themselves because they were born the way they are is an incorrect argument. God would not hold the homosexual responsible if he/she had a genetic aberration that could not be helped. The good news is that homosexuals, just as all sinners, can be saved, if they repent (desist from sinning) of their sins and accept God's provision of grace (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

Brother Martin touches on an important topic of our day. Men persist in calling homosexuality an “alternate lifestyle.” Yet, down through the ages, God consistently called it SIN! It may be called by a different name; it may be promoted as normal; and people of wealth and importance may embrace it. But God said it is sin, and that will stand when this world is on fire! God does not hate homosexuals and lesbians. He hates what we must hate—the SIN, not the person. Many people want to label us “gay bashers” or “prejudiced.” Such is only a smoke-screen attempt and shows a failure to study the issue in light of the scriptures. A lifestyle can only be right if God says it is right. The world’s name calling and labeling does not change the facts God’s word contains concerning this subject. Let us seek to turn others away from SIN, and toward the cross and Christ. It makes no difference what sin it is. All sin leads to the same place—eternal death (Romans 6:23).
